By [The Endless Journey Collection]
When I first started selling my handmade accessories—beaded jewelry, bow ties, neckties, earrings, and t-shirts—pop-up markets felt like the perfect fit. I loved the energy, the face-to-face conversations, and seeing people try on pieces that I put so much heart into. But after several seasons of events, I’ve learned a few things that changed how I run my business—and how I see the future.
Here are the biggest lessons I’ve taken away from the pop-up scene:
⸻
🌧 1. The Weather is a Bigger Risk Than You Think
Outdoor markets can be beautiful… or disastrous. Rain, wind, heat—all of it can damage products and drain energy. I’ve had displays knocked over and waterlogged, jewelry damaged, and t-shirts and ties soaked through.
Lesson: Always over-prepare for the elements—or better yet, move more of your business online to avoid the gamble.
⸻
🤝 2. People Love the Story Behind the Product
When I talk to customers, they light up when I tell them how a piece was made, what inspired it, or what materials I used.
Lesson: Storytelling sells. That’s why I’m now working to bring more of that storytelling onto my website and social media so even online shoppers feel that personal connection.
⸻
💬 3. Direct Feedback is Invaluable
I’ve learned which pieces attract attention, which ones people hesitate over, and what questions they ask before buying.
Lesson: Pop-ups are like real-time market research. I use that info to tweak designs, prices, and even product descriptions on my website.
⸻
💼 4. Not All Events Are Worth the Cost
Between booth fees, travel, setup, and time, some markets just don’t pay off. I’ve learned to ask about event traffic, vendor limits, and marketing support before committing.
Lesson: Time is money. I now focus more on long-term, low-overhead sales—like my online store.
⸻
🛒 5. Some Customers Want to Buy Later—Give Them That Option
I can’t count how many times someone said, “I’ll check out your site later,” but I had no way to follow up.
Lesson: I’ve since added business cards with QR codes, an email signup sheet, and now… this blog! 😊
⸻
🎯 What’s Next?
While I may still do the occasional pop-up (especially indoors), my goal is to grow my online business where I can better control my time, protect my products, and still connect with customers in meaningful ways.
If you found this helpful or interesting, I’d love for you to take a look around the site. And if you’ve ever shopped at one of my markets—thank you. You helped shape this journey.
